Statement from the PRESIDENTS’ COUNCIL on the STATE OF EMERGENCY

The Association Presidents and their representatives expressed great concern about the events that unfolded in our Parliament on the afternoon of July 20, and which resulted in the defeat of the Government’s motion for the extension, at the request of the Security Forces, of the State of Emergency in the Corporate Area and in St. Catherine.

Good Morning, Ladies and Gentlemen.
On behalf of the Officers of The Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our third PSOJ Chairman’s Club Breakfast Forum for 2010. COALITION OF CIVIL SOCIETY GROUPS SIGNALS INTENT TO ENSURE TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY IN NATIONAL LEADERSHIP

Arising out of a joint dialogue held on Wednesday, June 2, 2010, we the several groups signed below have given consideration to the grave and urgent matters facing the nation, and announce our intention to work together on a long term basis, to demand non-partisan civic participation in the affairs of the nation going forward. 

A DEFINING MOMENT IN OUR HISTORY

The Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) is encouraging the members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) to continue their relentless and courageous efforts to restore law and order in certain sections of the Capital.  

Like all law abiding citizens of Jamaica, members of the PSOJ deeply and sincerely regret the loss of lives of, and injuries sustained by, innocent Jamaicans who may have been caught in the crossfire, as well as those brave members of the security forces who have paid the ultimate price as they have engaged with criminal elements, particularly over the past week.

PSOJ SUPPORTS THE SECURITY FORCES

At its Annual General Meeting this morning, the members of The Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) unanimously voiced their support for the members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) for their unrelenting efforts as they work steadfastly, courageously and tirelessly to restore the Rule of Law and bring order to sections of the Corporate Area as well as to apprehend criminal elements, including alleged drug don Christopher Coke who is wanted for extradition to the USA. RULINGS ON APPLICATIONS FOR COURT ORDERS

In the Supreme Court today, the Honourable Mr. Justice R. Jones issued his ruling in the matter brought by the Hon Dorothy Lightbourne asking the Court for a declaration regarding the propriety of her declining to issue an authority to proceed under the Extradition Act arising from a request from the United States of America for the extradition of Christopher Michael Coke

His Lordship has ordered that the Second and Third Defendants, Mr. Joseph M. Matalon for and behalf of The Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica and the Leader of the Opposition the Most. Hon. Portia Simpson-Miller, respectively, be removed and allowed the respective counsels to make submissions in regard to costs.  However, upon hearing Dr. KD Knight for the Third Defendant and Mr. Richard Small for the Second Defendant, Mr. Justice Jones ruled no order as to costs.

PSOJ NOT A PROPER PARTY TO AG’S EXTRADITION CLAIM

As reported in the press, The PSOJ has been named as a defendant in an action filed by the Attorney General as claimant, and seeking declaratory relief with respect to certain issues surrounding the recent request by the US Government for the extradition of Mr. Christopher Coke.

Newly appointed Commissioner of Customs Danville Walker was firm in his belief that corruption will only serve to undermine Jamaica's economic growth and development. He made this statement in his address to private sector leaders at the PSOJ's Job Creation Awards Breakfast held on July 1, 2008 at the Hilton Kingston Hotel.
