PRIVATE SECTOR URGED TO INVEST IN AGRICULTURE

PRIVATE SECTOR URGED TO INVEST IN AGRICULTURE
There are many lucrative investment opportunities in the agricultural sector.  That was the word from Dr. the Hon.  Christopher Tufton, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, to private sector leaders at a special breakfast meeting held on January 19, 2010 at the Knutsford Court Hotel.    The event was hosted by The Private Sector Organisation Of Jamaica (PSOJ) and Jamaica National Building Society.
Minister Tufton used the occasion to not only try to increase the level of confidence of the  private sector regarding investing in the agricultural sector, but to also highlight some of the business opportunities   as well as inform the group about the Government’s strategies being implemented  to facilitate the investments.  He also shared with his audience the support mechanism which would be available to potential investors.

In response to some of the queries raised by the business leaders present, Minister Tufton said that:
•    While recognising that the condition of the road network was an important consideration for potential investors, an effort was being made to have the National Works Agency’s overall road improvement work programme include roads which support agriculture.   There was also EU funding being identified specifically for repairs to cane roads.
•    There was a programme in the Ministry under which persons were being trained as Farm Managers and would be made available to investors.  In addition, linkages had been made with overseas institutions to provide external training and support in specific areas as required.
•    The possibility of transforming the existing Elim School (for agricultural students) into an institution which would offer training in farm management was being explored.
•    While some hotels were not doing enough to support local produce,   there was a need for a middle man (private investor) to bridge the gap between the primary agricultural product and the hotel chefs’ requirements.
