Frequently Asked Questions

What is the National Tree Planting Initiative?

The National Tree Planting Initiative to plant three million trees in three years was launched by the Most Honourable Prime Minister Andrew Holness on October 4, 2019. The objective of the Initiative is to support national development in the areas of climate change and reforestation efforts to increase forest cover and establish high value urban green spaces for all Jamaicans.

How is the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica involved?

The PSOJ has responded to a call from the Office of the Prime Minister for partnership to facilitate the planting of 500,000 trees.   The success of this partnership is dependent on the engagement and participation of our members  and we are pleased that some members have already committed  and have indeed moved ahead on the program.

How can I participate in the PSOJ’s National Tree Planting Initiative (NTPI)?

You may participate in the PSOJ NTPI by either:

  1. Purchasing plants/seedlings for planting on your own land

or

  1. Contributing funds towards the planting and maintenance of plants/seedlings at any location as determined by the Forestry Department

Once you have decided on the option you prefer, please complete this form and email to marketing@psoj.org

Who can participate?

Anyone can participate.

Our partners, the Forestry Department, however recommends that a clear plan of action, including the maintenance of the seedlings is created; hence participants are encouraged to organize themselves for execution of the effort while ensuring adherence to covid-19 protocols.

We especially encourage our members and other private sector businesses to participate by organizing their staff members to plant trees at their respective alma maters.

Is there a cost for participating?

There is no cost for participating in the NTPI. You will be required, however, to pay for the seedlings you wish to have planted.

What is the cost for the seedlings/plants?

If you opt to contribute towards the purchase of seedlings to be planted and maintained by the Forestry Department, the cost of a seedling is $1000.

If you choose to purchase seedlings and to organize your own planting and maintenance, the standard cost for seedlings ranges from J$100 to J$350. Costs depends on the type of seedling being purchased – variations include pre timber seedlings, ornamental seedlings and fruit tree seedlings. All seedlings received must be maintained to ensure that they become established.
